Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans in Houston
A Medicare Supplement helps pay the costs Original Medicare leaves behind, like deductibles and coinsurance. I compare prices from several companies so you can see your options side by side.

How a Supplement works
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) pays most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not all. You still owe deductibles, a 20% share of most Part B services, and hospital coinsurance — with no yearly limit. A Supplement picks up some or all of those costs.
- You can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare. There are no networks.
- Supplements don’t include drug coverage, so most people add a separate Part D drug plan.
- A Supplement can’t be combined with a Medicare Advantage plan. You pick one path or the other.
Plan G and Plan N
Supplement plans are standardized by letter: a Plan G from one company has the same benefits as a Plan G from another. Only the price and the company’s service differ. Plans G and N are common choices for people who are new to Medicare.
| What it covers | Plan G | Plan N |
|---|---|---|
| Part A hospital coinsurance and deductible | Yes | Yes |
| Part B 20% coinsurance | Yes | Yes, except up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that don’t lead to admission |
| Part B deductible | No | No |
| Part B excess charges | Yes | No |
| Foreign travel emergencies (up to plan limits) | 80% | 80% |
| Monthly premium | Varies by company, age, zip code and tobacco use. Plan N usually costs less per month than Plan G. | |
Plans C and F aren’t available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. A high-deductible version of Plan G is also available.
When to buy: your 6-month window
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the first month you’re 65 or older and have Part B, and lasts 6 months. During that window, a company can’t turn you down or charge you more because of your health.
Texas doesn’t have a “birthday rule” that lets people switch Supplements each year without health questions. After your 6-month window, buying or switching a Supplement usually means answering health questions, except in certain situations — for example, if you lose job-based coverage or your Medicare Advantage plan leaves your area. That makes choosing well the first time important.
What affects the price
- Your age and zip code
- Tobacco use
- Which plan letter you choose
- Household discounts, which many companies offer if you live with a spouse or partner
- How each company prices its plans over time — some raise rates faster than others
Because the benefits are the same across companies, comparing prices and rate history is the main job. That’s what I do for you.
Supplement or Medicare Advantage?
Both are good fits for different people. A Supplement usually costs more each month but gives predictable costs and nationwide doctor choice. A Medicare Advantage plan often has a lower premium and extra benefits, but uses networks and copays. See the side-by-side comparison.
