Every year from October 15 to December 7, people with Medicare can change their Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the coming year. Plans change their premiums, drug lists and networks every January, so a plan that fit last year might not fit next year.

1. Read your Annual Notice of Change

Your plan mails it by September 30. It lists what’s changing: premiums, copays, the drug list and the network. Look for your prescriptions and your doctors.

2. Make a list of your prescriptions

Write down every drug, the dose and how often you take it. Drug coverage is where plans differ the most.

3. Confirm your doctors and pharmacy

If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, check that your doctors are still in network for next year. Check your pharmacy too — preferred pharmacies can cost less.

4. Compare total yearly cost, not just the premium

A $0-premium plan isn’t always the cheapest. Add up premiums, drug costs and the copays you’re likely to pay.

5. Decide before December 7

Changes take effect January 1. If you miss the window, your options until next fall are limited.

Want a second set of eyes? I’ll review your plan at no cost — or call a licensed insurance agent at (832) 734-6825 (TTY 711).
